**Squealing or squeaking when braking.** This is often the first sign of worn brake pads. Most modern pads have a metal wear indicator that produces this sound deliberately to warn you.
**Grinding noise.** If you've gone past the squeal stage, you may hear a grinding sound. This often means the brake pads have worn down completely and metal is contacting metal — a serious situation requiring immediate attention.
**Increased stopping distance.** If your car takes longer to stop than usual, your brakes are losing effectiveness. This can be due to worn pads, glazed discs, or low brake fluid.
**Pulling to one side when braking.** This can indicate a stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or a brake fluid issue.
**Vibration or pulsing through the brake pedal.** Often caused by warped brake discs — common after heavy use or if the car has been standing for a long time.
**Spongy or soft brake pedal.** A pedal that goes further to the floor than normal suggests air in the brake lines or a brake fluid issue — both require immediate attention.
**Warning light.** Many modern cars have a brake wear indicator light on the dashboard. Don't ignore it.
